Shadowdark is my new obsession...


I recently ran a session of Shadowdark with my friends, and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. 

Running the game was smooth as butter, and I was shocked how easily my players took to the old-school dungeon crawler style of play. So many great moments of risk versus reward came through in the 6 hours we played, and I have to attribute that to the system. 

My players are great, but their skills and playstyles vary wildly, and they are prone to overthinking. They might have thought the torch timer was superfluous, but as the GM I felt it got them going where normally they would stall, and they took risk both to great profit and great *fun*.

Anyways, I never ran a game by the book more than once (or hardly ever once honestly), so I created a short list of rulings I did differently that first session, to parse where I will house rule and where I will return to RAW.

Long story short, I wouldn't change much, but couldn't help but want to add the Cleave mechanic from ACKS II, and then made a class around the mechanic in about 24 hours time. I'm not sure how useful it will be, and my sleep suffered immensely, but I am excited by it which is at least 100% of why I ever do anything. 10/10 will do it again.
